Every day there are ethical decisions that impact the hundreds or thousands of people who watch, read, listen, and/or click on a media source. The foundation for making the right decision starts with ethics classes in college. Students in the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism will use this blog to reflect on ethical questions in the media today.

Fake news, deepfakes, fake everything!

What is real?
I would consider myself an honest individual, what about yourself? The majority of people, I believe, are good and honest. If you are somebody that is good and honest, you may expect the same out of others. We can sometimes be deceived by what we see online. Of course, it's only human nature to assume what we are seeing is real because you don't believe somebody would deliberately lie to you.
Unfortunately, having blind trust in things you see on the internet is a thing of the past. We can so easily be deceived. We've all heard of photoshop, and sometimes seen examples of the insane things that can be changed with the program...but those were just photographs. Videos used to serve as a safer and more reliable source of information because they were not easily manipulated...unfortunately those days are over as well. With advancements in technology, video now has the capability to be edited. It is a confusing concept, but this article Explaining Deep Fakes does a great job breaking down how video software can learn faces and faceswap people in videos. It is a new technology that a lot of people are unaware of, which can make it even more dangerous.
The image above is edited so well that you would not be able to tell which is real, and which is fake. The thing about deepfakes that make them worrisome is how realistic they look. They are using deepfakes in pornography and changing the faces of politicians. This article goes into depth explaining the Pro's and Con's of Deepfake Technology. It speaks to how deepfakes can erode our trust in media even further. With that, it makes a point that nearly anybody would be petrified of a technology that can make it look like anybody is saying or doing something. But, it does have some pros which I was not originally thinking about. It is an interesting read to get both sides of the story.
Keeping Deepfake Tech at Bay...
Technology in your life may seem to run rampant, and we often think of ourselves as helpless when it comes to keeping technology at bay. We feel that we need it in every facet of our lives, and we cannot escape it. While, many of us need technology for work, school, or to connect with loved ones, there are ways we can keep the technology at bay, and deepfake tech is no different.
In this article by Forbes, they speak about new standards to protect against deepfakes. A team of tech giants got together to see what they can do to keep deepfakes at bay. I think that a good start is just being aware that everything you see might not be what you think it is, and to be on high alert for these types of things.
Obama is one of the people who has been a target of deepfake technology, and one of the most widely circulated deep fake videos was of "him" in 2018 talking about Donald Trump and fake news. Now remember while watching any of those, no matter how real they look, they are FAKE!
