Pay Attention to THIS
It's funny what's considered "Breaking News" sometimes. Like, why do I need a notification about Kim Kardashian ever? We have so much that draws focus away from what is really happening. We know more about movie and reality TV stars than our lawmakers. The ones who should be the influencers of our lives. This is where the drama is real.
Think about the recent juxtaposition of the Met Gala and the potential overturning of Roe Vs Wade. It's the perfect example of being fed glamour while major upheavals are happening behind closed doors.
It's like distracting a toddler with a toy so they don't notice the scary thing. I don't want to see the scary things either, but that doesn't make them not happen. What are Closed Door ethics?
Mainstream Stories
I'm happy for Rocky and Rhianna, too. That's going to be a cute baby. But what if we had coverage on that level for Pastor Greg Locke and his book burning this past February? There is an alarmingly fast uptick on banning books in this country. I've never seen this as Breaking News, however.
What Journalism Could Be
The big questions we might not think about. As we get our bites of news, do we, as citizens, have access to independent and accurate information? Does this information give us enough to make informed decisions and be self-sovereign? Who owns your media outlet? What's their main output? Who sponsors them? What causes are they behind? What don't they show?
We've been in the internet age so long that we don't even remember how exactly how we got here. We've moved from getting our network news from our trusted nightly personalities to getting little blips of things on our phones all day.
I'm not wanting to move backwards. I love living in this digital age. However, I do long for integrity and facts.
