Is seeing believeing?

Deep Fake

With technology making it possible for anyone to alter videos and create false content how will you ever trust what you are seeing again?  A deep fake is a computer generated replica of a person saying or doing something that is not real.  The video below explains the process and offers examples of deep fakes.

A machine technique call generative adversarial network (GAN) is the program used to create such videos.  This is an inexpensive program that can be purchased by an individual or an image an be sent to a company ad the video can be created on your behalf.

Should we know what is really happening around the world?

Often times images are printed not to reveal an accurate picture of what is happening in times of natural disaster and war times.  When a publisher does make the decision to publish a graphic image it is not for the purpose of "shock factor" or to boost sales.  Quite the contrary, the purpose for publishing graphic images is to inform the people and maintain a democracy.

COVID-19 is a good example of information that was being kept from the public.  This link will share a story about a New York City Funeral Director preparing bodies for cremation during the COVID-19 pandemic.  The government of China was controlling the release of information that could lead to the spread and containment of COVID-19 and its censorship

How to undo what has been done? Videos gone viral!

In the video of the Ingenious people and the the students from a Catholic High School in Kentucky, the original video that went viral did not portray the entire event that led to the original video clip.

It was not until other footage was released that included the events leading up to and after this short clip was taken to get a clear picture of the events that day. Video clips are exactly what they are clips.  We need to remember that in order to get the full picture we must collect all the data, not just the parts other people want us to see.

Conclusion

Manipulating images to alter the appearance of the original images is not accurate reporting.  Advertising is also another way of manipulating the outcome of a product.  Self image issues begin with the false idea of perfection.  By altering images to appear to be something they are not, we lead the consumer to believe that what we see is real when it is actually altered.

  1. Hi Debra,
I am so glad you showed the last image that is exactly what I needed to see after going on social media and seeing so many of my friends on vacations when I know for a fact my friends going on vacation posting pictures in there bikini do not have washboard abs. Taking this class overall has helped me with my self esteem I see so many images like the one on the right and I think to myself how is anyone supposed to feel good in their skin when people have bodies like that however this class and more specifically your blog has helped me realize is seeing truly believing? As well as manipulating images to change an appearance to viewers is something that is done way to often.
