Ingrid Ciprian-Matthews, currently working as the EVP of Strategic Professional Development at CBS News, came to talk to a journalism class here at Ohio University.

Her Past:
Ciprian-Matthews' first and only internship occurred after she finished grad school, and that was at CNN. CNN had not yet grown into the huge news company that it is known as today, and she said it was commonly referred to as "Chicken Noodle Network" during that time. Ciprian-Matthews also worked as a freelancer at NPR. One of her majors in college was in Spanish, and NPR had one Spanish broadcasting network in San Francisco.Ciprian-Matthews has now worked for CBS News for 26 years. What I wanted to hear this speaker:
When I heard someone from CBS News was coming to OU to speak to students, I was so excited. This summer, during my internship with WBNS-10TV in Columbus, Norah O'Donnell came to speak to the whole station. I got to meet her during her transition into the CBS Evening News Anchor. I got to ask her a question during her Q&A session, and that was honestly one of the most nerve-wracking and rewarding experiences.  So, it made me happy to hear that someone from the same news organization was coming to speak to us.

The topic of ethics:
When being asked the question of ethics at CBS News, Ciprian-Matthews said that when the News station realized that social media was here to stay, they developed ethical standards for social media use as well. This makes sense because the age of digital media has changed how we view and consume our media. If you want to read more about CBS' code of ethics, under SPJ, click here.

In regards to the hiring process:
One question that was asked during the Q&A session, was what is the one characteristic that is looked for during the hiring process for CBS News? Ciprian-Matthews said that this was a difficult question because there is not just one characteristic. She said the interviewing process has helped her to be able to see the high number of people who get their news from social media sites. It is surprising to her how many people have never actually read a newspaper or a full story, but they want to go into this business.

Biggest takeaway:
I had a lot of big takeaways from Ciprian-Matthews' talk. When she was talking about how it surprises her how many people look to social media platforms, I took away that it is important to stay up to date on tradition, as well as digital media. Not just choosing one or the other. In this time period, yes, digital media is expanding with the growth of social media sites, but it is important to still read the school newspaper, a local magazine, etc. We should be wanting to know all the platforms of journalism, how it started, and where it is going.
