Social media these days is something that just cannot be ignored. Whether you are in news and information or strategic communication, every type of journalist has to deal with social media. It has a very huge and dominating presence across the world for people of all ages.
How News Gets Across
Twitter is a great site to get news to millions of people all at the same rate. Everyone who follows a news organization will see the same tweet at the time it is tweeted. TV stations across the US use the site to get stories out to the public at a fast pace. Journalists today have to know how to use social media. It gets bigger day by day.
Facebook is still a relevant site as well. The logarithms for Facebook though are made so that not all news that is posted is seen by everyone on Facebook. If stories are posted, there is a chance that breaking news isn't seen by everyone that "likes" a page or is "friends" with someone.
Journalists still must be able to pass along a story to the public in a fast way, and a lot of times that way is through social media. A lot of times companies will create a brand for their company through social media.

Our world, sadly or not, cannot function without the easy communication of social media, email and our phones. It is so easy to push a picture, story or idea onto social media and -- bam! Like that it gets out there faster than anyone could have thought. It is a good way to get feedback pretty quickly. Companies can easily figure out what works and what doesn't for their company based on what feedback they get from social media.
A lot of times, social media can be used for evil, whether it is professionally or not. It definitely stinks when people do use social media for good. Social media is something that I'm sure those older generations never even ever would have thought about. I'm sure they couldn't even imagine the life that we have now. This link shares how social media has changed generations.
Although social media is often associated with negative connotations, it is often used for good. Companies and TV stations are using it for their benefit. The public is already on board with it, so the companies have to keep up by being a part of social media. It is up to the individual to hop on the social media train, but if they don't, they will soon be in the dark.
