Ethics Month in an Unethical Climate

We live in times where ethical boundaries are constantly being questioned. Countless fake news articles are being spread across social media platforms and questionable tactics seem to be used on a regular basis. As a young professional, how do you know the difference between right and wrong? And what standards do we abide by?

When you hear "public relations" many people think of spinster or a community of Olivia Pope's, bending the law to reach your desires. This couldn't be farther from the truth. In fact, the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) reinforces the standards advocacy, honesty, expertise, loyalty and fairness that we are all held to because PR without ethics isn't PR. It's manipulations. It's spinning. It's just plain wrong.

While we are surrounded by fake news and polarized politics, it's comforting to know this community of PR professionals are prepared to stand their ground. Standing your ground in these environments means refusing to stand for microaggressions, intolerance and deception. It's our job as PR professionals to call out people showing this field in the incorrect light.

September is the PRSA's Ethics Month. This month highlights the core principles in PR ethics and enforces the standards to which PR professionals are held.

How to Get Involved With Ethics Month

Over the course of September, PRSA hosts a variety of webinars and Twitter chats about ethical decision making. Why are these conversations important? They give real world insight into problems PR professionals actually face. These colleagues face the same criticism and yet abide by the same code.

Additionally, PRSA and PRSSA Chapters across the nation host their own conversations about ethics during this month. I encourage all of you to get involved and speak your mind. Share your challenges and also your solutions. There is so much you can learn from the strategies of others.

The Inclusion of Authenticity

One tactic to include in PR campaigns to follow ethical standards is authenticity. Not only do audience members trust and value authentic messages, but they are based in truth - making them easy to connect. Authentic messages show audience members simplicity and honesty. Often times they are filled with power or hope.

Know what your audience wants to hear and always base that in truth. Your brand, credibility and conscience will thank you in the long run.
