The debate that has surfaced worldwide is if technological advancements in journalism have changed for the better. From using social media platforms such as Twitter and Instagram and different news sources such as podcasts, we now can receive the news faster than ever.
Whether mainstream social media platforms should be in charge of how news is shared is a question that must be answered considering they are the most efficient and the fastest, but they also can be the most inaccurate and biased at times. I understand the technological advancements through journalism were inevitable, but if we aren't putting out the most trustworthy news and it's not of the highest quality, why do it?
While social media platforms have caused the issue of fake news and biased content, they have also provided information to an entirely new generation of followers. Growing up in a generation where technology has played such a significant role in my childhood, I see the significance of technology in my everyday life and how I view the news.
Viewing and seeing the news has become much easier by allowing you to get alerts or view short videos on a social media app rather than watching the news in the morning. That has genuinely increased the number of viewers of important news content and has opened the door of spreading the news to a much younger generation.
We even have seen how news views change as cable services have started to be replaced by wifi streaming services such as Youtube TV and Hulu. As we live in a digital world, it's starting to see that how we perceive news is becoming so much more technological.
While we have seen the enhancement of technological uses in journalism, we have seen that the digital side of news is not going away. The only thing we can do now is to use digital media for the proper uses and hold ourselves to a higher standard.
With the increasing uses of fake news, especially in the digital world we live in and with the high uses of social media, we as journalists must take our work and hold ourselves to the highest standard. Although we can't stop the spread of fake news, we can do our job to put out the truth and eliminate fake stories to the best of our ability.
Although technology has already made its mark on journalism, I can not claim or agree that it has led to a better digital media world and stand neutral on this issue.
