Communities Need to Depend on Reliable Journalism

Citizens are eager to know what is going on in their local communities and the world around them, so it is important that they are receiving information that is valid and of true, reliable taste. Over the years, as unfortunate as it is, the public has become more and more untrusting of their news.

The best way for a journalists to do their job is to follow core principles and values. For example, journalists should pursue accuracy at all times, be fair to others, give communities a voice, always give honest sources, etc.

With our nation's party system being so polarized nowadays, it is difficult for journalists to express their own true feelings and opinions via social media with all of the current standing rules and guidelines. As explained on the Columbia Journalism Review., there are policies for social media that prohibit certain comments reporters can share. According to the article, the policies are convincing the public that journalists are biased which is the exact opposite of what journalists are trying to work against. The article also goes into detail about how social media is meant to be social, and being social means to communicate one's opinions with others, and prohibiting journalist's opinions on social media can end up causing even more issues worldwide.

The article on the Columbia Journalism Review. believed that it is wrong to take away the views and opinions of journalists, and that they shouldn't be prohibited to state their own thoughts on social media, but another article on GBH News disagrees.

As explained in the GBH News article, it is right for journalists to repeat the neutrality they provide throughout their day jobs directly into what they are posting for the public to view via social media. It is believed that if a journalist has an opinion on a public official for example, the reporting towards the individual may be crooked whether they are fond of them or not.

Being a journalist means there are morals to follow, and minimizing harm on the public is crucial. It is important that the public is receiving accurate information from valid sources to keep a strong democracy as a whole.

The biggest foundation of the media as a whole is simple; that foundation is truth, and the public relies on an honest source of the news they are receiving. The public demands that journalists are transparent which is another major principle.

Following a strict moral code in journalism will lead to honest news, and the public will benefit from that in the future.
