Native Advertising

Wow! It is crazy to me how creative people are getting with ads and disguising them in what we read, watch, and listen to. Native advertising is a new term to me and is something I find so interesting. According to Out Brain the term Native Advertising is described as "The use of paid ads that match the look, feel and function of the media format in which they appear"(Outbrain.com) As we discussed in class advertising is coming up with so many ways to make it less noticeable you are trying to be sold or persuaded to buy something. People nowadays do not want to be sold things. In the past, advertisements would be so obvious when they were trying to sell something or inform customers.

Why is native advertising so popular?

The picture above it is showing readers different types of native ads and how they differ from in-content ads, sponsored ads, etc. I wonder when was the shift in people not wanting to know they're being sold to. It is making it tricky, yet creative for advertisers to find ways to target their audiences. Some shocking statistics from Wordstream "Almost half of the consumers have no idea what native advertising is" (Wordstream.com). As mentioned above, I had no idea what it was either until I had to do this assignment. I don't think they want you to know either, because then it kinda defeats the purpose. Another interesting fact from Wordstream is "90% of publishers either have or plan to launch native advertising campaigns" (wordstream). I think it's a great idea for publishers to use native advertising and benefit both parties. This is only the beginning for advertising and who knows where it will be a year, yet ten years from now and how much the market is going to change. Also, with how creative and the new technology that will come out.

  1. You have some great perspectives here! I did not think about the idea that these native ads are insanely creative. On the side of advertisers, props to them! However, on the side of editors this may be an issue to prove factual information and secure trust from readers! There are both pros and cons to this new trend.
