Photo Evidence: When is it Enough?

Every publication has a choice to make. They have to create a story to inform, to entertain the viewer or capture their attention, as well as provide the audience with the images so that they can get a feel of what is going on in the world. But how do you know when it is taken too far, when is it enough, and when is it too much. With every release each publication are faced with the pressure to report the truth and many times are faced scrutiny from the general public. Publications are meant to inform the world but sometimes with the right photos it can make an impact.

Distorted Photos
This is an example of when things are being taken too far. Growing up and seeing women in magazines with the perfect figures and a BIG BOLD CAPTION usually saying how to lose weight in 10 days, the latest trends and/or HOW TO KEEP YOUR PARTNER SATISFIED 101 different ways. Some publications are meant for pure entertainment such as these magazines but when will these include a form or a sense of reality.

For example in Glamour, or Vogue magazine you see these celebrities wearing a lot of makeup and in expensive clothes. But you never really see those celebrities talk about the things that every woman goes through on a daily basis for example weight loss or weight gain.

Every woman is different, they are shaped differently, and they deal with weight changes, they will continue to deal with for the rest of their lives. That will never be seen because all this is marketed to do is to get women especially young women to buy into the whole there is one type or beauty and if you don’t meet the qualifications, or you just missed the cut, it may affect how those individuals view themselves. One thing some entertainment publications are finally doing is releasing unedited to unfiltered shots to show that even the most put together individuals still has flaws.

Graphic Photos
These photos are meant to be attention grabbing. They are meant to captivate the audience and keep them talking. In this particular segment or section, depending on your news source or outlet there is no line that can be drawn. The goal is to get the readers attention, and to keep it. Sometimes that means pushing the envelope but also staying in the realms of ethical journalism. Another way graphic photos can help the publication is by showing how intense an event was for example the before and after effects ofHurricane Harvey in Houston Texas. The reason why photos were incredibly important was because it captured all the commotion and the tragedy that everyone was hearing about. It put faces to what the issue was. There was no way that you can look at these images and not be affected.

Telling the truth when publishing the news is important. But it is more than that adding images, adding faces to the story makes the audience feel included. There is a line that sometimes need to be drawn because over sharing can take away the purpose of the story. Your images should help support your story and what you trying to say, not overpower it.
