Good vs. Bad Advertising

Advertising is a very important took that is used everyday for several different things.  Some ads are clear cut and get right to the point, others not so much.  The more advanced technology gets; the more advanced ads get.  Advertisements have become much more frequent and seen where you would least expect it.  There are several movies and television shows that advertise certain products.  For example, a character can be drinking a certain drink or wearing a certain article of clothing with a logo on it.  Often times, people do not notice these are advertisements.

Bad Advertising
In a recent study, it is said that advertisements are starting to have a negative impact on children.  First ads play a huge role in underage drinking because kids see other people do it, so they want to fit in.  This can lead to unhealthy behaviors and bad habits.  The more they are exposed to it, the more likely they are to participate in the same behaviors.  It is very hard to stop your child from seeing certain advertisements because they are all over most social media platforms.  Kids are getting smart phones at a young age which exposes them to advertisements even more than usual.

Not only is alcohol an issue with advertising, but food is as well.  There are lots of commercials that promote fast and unhealthy foods, but hardly any that promote healthy foods.  Often times, there is a catch phrase or song that is related to a sugary cereal or unhealthy food that is easily remembered.

An ad turns bad when it is a product that could harm you, or when the advertisement misleads you into thinking it is something else.  The image below is a good example of an ad that is showing what McDonald's says a Big Mac looks like and on the right of an image of what it actually looks like.

Ad Fraud
Ad fraud has been an extremely popular topic in the media recently.  People are trying to create better ways to avoid it, nut it is extremely challenging.  There are lots of different types of ad fraud and each one is hard to spot.  It is pretty pricey to get rid of fraud.  There are specific fees depending on how many impressions are monitored which often timers there are many.  It is said that ad frauds are the world's best hackers and is is difficult to fight them off.  The problem of ad fraud has gotten out of hand and needs to be controlled.

Good Advertising
Not all advertising is bad.  Advertising lets the consumers keep alert and educated on any upcoming products a company may be releasing and the price of them.  Customers can learn about a business or product and use it as a way to become informed.  Businesses are able to make an identity for themselves through their advertisements.  It is key for marketers to know hoe to advertise things well and effectively so a good ad does not turn into a bad ad.

People like ads that have emotion towards them.  They enjoy looking at something that makes them feel good, or has humor to it.  It is important that ads are clear and accurate about the information.

Overall, advertising has drastically changed over the years and will continue to change for years to come.
