Journalism: The Importance of Adhering to Ethical Codes

The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) states that the code of ethics is voluntary. In other words, there is no way to enforce or investigate instances of ethical practice amongst journalists. Instead, the SPJ provides a framework to evaluate ethical behavior. However, it is the journalist's responsibility to acknowledge this framework.

In this day and age, the need for ethical reporting is of the utmost importance. Trust in the media is at an all-time-low. The SPJ believes that enforcing a strict set of rules for journalists to follow would lead to regulation by the Government and courts. Thus, restricting freedom of speech and press. Considering both of these entities, this makes the idea of ethical reporting paramount.

Like the SPJ, the RTDNA (radio television digital news association) tries not to dictate exactly what journalists can or can't do. They provide resources necessary for ethical decision making. Both the SPJ and RTDNA stress the importance of facts and accuracy: the quickest way to regaining the trust of America.

The era of "fake news" suggests that journalists are creating stories for clicks and attention. Furthermore, "fake news" implies that journalists are not being truthful or fabricating stories in some way.

Media transparency is considering how and why certain information or stories are communicated to an audience. Therefore, the importance of accountability is implied. Regaining the public's trust starts with being transparent and accountable.

In some ways, the emergence of social media as a news outlet and frequently used media source has clouded the judgement of journalists. It has become an arm's race: who can be the first to report breaking news or a story. This has led to non-factual information. This has jaded the credibility of sources. Let's remember: the number one "rule" of journalism is to be accurate and report the truth. The most important aspect of journalism is not to be the first to report a story but to be the most factually correct in reporting a story.

Remember: it is up to the journalist to follow these ethical codes. The journalist must make decisions based on the knowledge he has obtained from the SPJ, RTDNA and other sources that have introduced ethical practices.

The future of journalism depends on you: the new-wave of reporters and writers. The codes are out there, it is up to you to follow these codes and be as ethical as possible. Follow in the footsteps of those who created ethical reporting and those who have been ethical throughout their careers as journalists. Let's regain America's trust. Let's give America a reason to believe what they read.
